Assortment Signals in Small-Format Branches

How to judge category depth in compact chain stores without counting every SKU.

Assortment Signals in Small-Format Branches

Small-format neighborhood chains cannot carry a hypermarket range, so the review question is not completeness. It is whether the shelves answer the daily list for people who live within a short walk.

We look at staples first: rice, cooking oil, fresh dairy if present, eggs, and a basic produce table. Then we note whether the branch leans into ready-to-eat, household refill packs, or imported snacks that signal a different shopper mix.

Private-label facing is another quiet signal. Heavy private-label blocks in core categories can mean the chain is protecting margin; sparse private label with noisy branded promotions can mean the branch is chasing traffic over basket structure.

For a written market review, photograph one bay per priority category where policy allows, and describe facing in plain language. Decision-makers understand “three deep on cooking oil, gap on fish sauce” faster than a raw SKU count.
